Reasons to read The Theory of Everything|Book Review

"Why do we remember the past, but not the future? Why is the past so different from the future?"

STEPHEN HAWKING brings a series of 7 lectures-covering everything from the early ideas about the universe to the string theory in a very charming and engaging way in quest for one unified THEORY OF EVERYTHING that connects them all through one thread. Wanna dig deeper into this?

Genre:  Astronomy
Book length: 132 pages
Published In: 2002

Synopsis & Overview

Hawking starts with reviewing past Ideas About The Universe from Aristotle's philosophies to Hubble's observation. He describes the early stage models of the universe in this lecture. In the 2nd lecture, he describes how the universe could not be static; either it had to be The Expanding Universe or a contracting one. Universe must have beginning that we know as the Big Bang.
Black Holes are explained in very simplified way in the next lecture. Dwarf Star, Neutron Star, Pulsurs and other cosmological facts makes this part intresting. This lecture also reveals about the Indian Contribution in Astronomy.

4th lecture really makes us feel surprised. When the two greatest theories of the 20th century i.e. Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity are applied on black holes, we get to know Black Holes Ain't So Black.
5th lecture is the longest and quite hard to understand. It deals with the application of quantum mechanics on The Origin And Fate Of The Universe. Going through it gives one the knowledge about the boundary condition of the universe. This will make u think Does this universe really needs a creator!?

The penultimate lecture is personally my favourite one. This full of amazement chapter explains the different arrows or The Direction Of Time in very simple words. Is there any possibility to remember what happened in the future!?
In final lecture, Hawking explains how Science is trying to find a unified theory that will include quantum mechanics, gravity and general relativity. If we could find this The Theory Of Everything, only then we would be able to really understand the universe.

⬆️The words in Bold are the tiltes of the lectures:)

Quotes & Favourite lines

" How much choice did God have in constructing the universe?"

There is no such thing as a free lunch. But the universe itself is the ultimate free lunch."

Critical Review

This book is a collection of seven related lectures by Hawking originally published in 1996 under the title, The Cambridge Lectures: Life Works.
The Theory of Everything is a short book that can act really good as an introduction to the subjects of cosmology. There is no mathematical equations , language is also very simple as easier as to be understood by a high school student(thankfully not a Shashi Tharoor Book 😀). This book is quite good for basic level of understanding of the universe. Topics like Big Bang and Black Holes are explained very briefly in simplest possible way. But if U want to dive deeper in the vast ocean of Cosmos, I wd suggest A Brief History Of Time by same author or Richard Feynman's Six Easy Pieces and its sequel, Six Not So Easy Pieces which are really the finest of this genre.
Title of the book is really exaggerated nor a conclusive answer to origin and fate of the universe is given.

Reasons to give ur time to this book

●if u are space & astronomy enthusiast!
●short, easy to understand yet highly informative in this genre.
●sets good base before going for the advanced cosmology books.
Simply, If u have ever gazed at the night sky and wondered what was up there and how it came to be. Then this is the must read book for u my friend.
Happy Reading:-)
